Slow Food/Noosaville School Report

The kids have thoroughly enjoyed their new taste experiences from the Permaculture Garden. The day Matt came & cooked for us was their first real taste of the food from the garden & everyone enjoyed that, 2 of the classes have been reminding me this week that they didn’t experience a turn at cooking, so they are looking forward to the next time.

On 10 September, the kids once again did taste testing – they are now getting very adventurous, no one hesitated to try (& enjoy) raw kohl rabi, it was a ‘game’ especially with the boys trying to eat the most Wasabi lettuce!. The first couple of groups got the first of the broccoli that was ready. They all enjoyed lettuce, Lebanese cress, fennel, nasturtiums, celery, silver beet & they kept going back for more spring onion, which surprised me. Some kids even came back at lunchtime to ask if they could pick/eat more food – definitely.

The garden is really booming & the kids love it. The ti pee is back up, the banana circle (half circle) is finished & the banana permit is on its way. Everything is growing very well & the native animals have just been investing from the edges & leaving us their manure – so everyone is working with us.

Each week I keep stressing that we need some photos released. I have emailed the teachers a photo I took of the kids with arms full of salads & suggested they approve that photo & forward it to the newspaper with a story. It is always a long process working with schools.

Next term, except for the first 2 weeks, I will be going to Noosaville fortnightly & towards the end of the term I presume even less as the $ terms of my contract dry up.

My next recommended date for a mini harvest would be MONDAY 15TH OCTOBER – as long as the vegies don’t grow too fast. I have a list of plants that I’m guessing will be ready for that time.
