Slow Food has grown over the last 21 years
to influence governments, corporate business and agriculture
in all corners of the globe.
Convivia are the local groups that make up this worldwide
organization and are the heart and soul of the movement.
There are more than 1000 of these in 80 plus countries.
None of Slow Food’s grand global initiatives would
have been possible without the grass roots support of over
80,000 members of these small local convivia.
Noosa Slow Food Convivium has a membership of 70-80 people,
though numbers fluctuate throughout the year.
In the last few years we have sponsored several local primary
schools in establishing kitchen gardens. Most of the money
raised through functions and raffles is expended in employing
a facilitator to establish and initially maintain these
gardens with the support of the school community.
This year (2010) we are expanding our activities to include
raising awareness of the aims and principles of the worldwide
Slow Food movement in the wider community.
On the last Thursday morning of each month we hold a breakfast
to which we invite a local grower or producer to speak about
their activities. Usually, their products form the theme
of the meal. These meetings have proved very popular with
members and friends alike and are advertised in the local
press and through mailouts to members.
Other functions held throughout the year include Slow Dinners,
a Long (national-themed) Alfresco Lunch, a President’s
event, a Film with Food evening in association with the
Noosa LongWeekend festival, and a School Harvest Picnic.
Through these we aim to connect gastronomy with sustainability,
ecology and protection of the environment, as well as support
our local growers and food artisans.
